Bad Moon On The Rise

Last night the moon was in the seventh house and Jupiter was aligned with Mars, or maybe not. But the moon rise was ten minutes after sunset and that created an opportunity to get some interesting images.

This time of year the moon rises behind the downtown area of San Diego if you are standing on Shelter Island on San Diego Bay. There was a full moon and the sunset glow was still being reflected off the windows of the high rise office bldgs and condos.

Keeping any detail in the moon can be a real challenge as it is so much brighter than the rest of the scene. By the time it gets off the horizon its color changes from yellow to white and detail is blown out.

Still, it is beautiful to see and fun to photograph. Shelter Island is a great spot on the bay and a place that Steve (and sometimes me too) likes to take his morning walk when he is in San Diego.

Directly across the bay is Naval Air Station North Island. There were some interesting images of the lighted facilities on the base.

This is the fuel facility on the base and the next image is of the old sea plane hangars now being used for helicopters.

My dad was a PBY pilot and he flew out of this facility in the early 50s.  Lot's of memories here.
