Masses of floating spartina drift out on the river. I make the mistake of following the path of a local power boat. They cut to the east of the marked channel. Heading that way I glance out Navionics to see that I am sailing over a marsh that is hidden by the high tide. I turn back west to the marked channel. 9:50 heading downriver at 2.6. A light overcast comes in and it feels a little chilly, I slip on my foul weather bibs. Wind comes and goes, the ebb tide is helping us as we work our way south on the Beaufort River. 11:00 off Port Royal. 11:15 hints of warm breeze. Doing 2.5 thanks to the tide. Suddenly the southwest wind fills in, making 5.0 knots. I feel the centerboard touch bottom, check the gps and it shows I should have 17 feet of water. Navionics shows an anchorage behind a marked shoal just northeast of Parris Island Spit. I sail over there and drop the anchor in about 10 feet of water, the shoal blocking the tide so much that SPARTINA sits right over the anchor. That's fine. A woman introduces herself as an enforcement officer with the state's Department of Natural Resources. She asks me if I know anything about a sailboat tied to the dock at the boat ramp. I tell her it is my boat, I'm just dropping off my truck now. She says "Please tell me that you are coming back to take your boat off the dock as soon as possible." An excellent trip. A little cooler than my past trips down there. The good thing about that is the cool air comes from north winds and those north winds are perfect for sailing down the ICW. A total of 19 days on the water, 15 of those days were sailing days. The others were spent visiting Webb in Hilton Head, waiting out too much wind and waiting out no wind. SPARTINA performed well. The new jib was excellent. The cold weather gear - merino wool thermals, a new merino wool hoodie, wool socks and drysuit - proved to be very important on this trip. I have had colder individual days on other trips, usually the fall trip on Chesapeake Bay, but overall this was the chilliest sail I have made. The cold weather gear made it both possible and enjoyable.

Stevehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17060896232365651376noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5137810012036013226.post-57822499805647251682024-02-29T07:21:00.000-05:002024-02-29T07:22:05.545-05:00on the road home

Stevehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17060896232365651376noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5137810012036013226.post-4228108686386156132024-02-19T13:14:00.003-05:002024-02-19T13:31:50.187-05:00 calling ahead to the marina

Me: Good morning. She later sent a photograph of SPARTINA under power (above). We exchanged texts, talked about meeting in person next year. We’ll see. But for now, cheers to chance meetings and fleeting moments.
