island morning

Walking along the docks near the ferries in Hatteras Village this morning I remembered coming down to the island for our first week-long visit over twenty years ago.  We had a house in Frisco for the week and I stopped by a seafood shop at Oden's docks to buy some fresh tuna steaks.  Making change, the woman behind the counter apologized for the pennies with the green patina.

"Why are they green" I asked.

"Because of the hurricane," she said, "all that salt air in the wind."

"Really?  You have hurricanes here?"

Little did I know what I would be doing over the next couple of decades.
