My goodness Steve!!! Your new sails are too powerful? Or more likely the mast had fatigued at the deck level. Glad however all is well !
It was a very windy day, sailing down with under mizzen and jib, kind of like a downhill slalom down the windy creeks. A hard jibe and possible just as another strong gust hit (unfortunate timing). Possibly the mast had some stress fractures in it from 14 years of use, fatigues as you say, possibly not. I'll never know. The wood was good, no rot, just good clear Douglas fir. And none of the glued seams on the birds mouth mast failed, it was all just twisted and split wood.
