decisions, decisions

Dawn called at 7 p.m., describing herself as freezing cold but at the same time sounding much better and more enthusiastic than her call early this morning.

She said the day started with two hours of paddling that was even more brutal than yesterday's trip.  Got to CP 1 before the 10 a.m. deadline.  She was a bit confused when she was told she was the last kayak through the checkpoint.  "Am I doing that bad?" she wondered, but then heading out she saw more kayaks to the north, maybe she wasn't the last after all.

Around noon the wind swung to the NW and she was able to paddle and at the same time use her Flat Earth sail.  The wind was incredible in the afternoon.

At the time of the call she was at Picnic Island trying to decide if she should camp there or to head to Lovers Key State Park and hope the rangers didn't find her camping there.  Her preference was to continue on to Lovers Key.  But on the other hand she doesn't like sailing at night.  And sailing, she said, is cold because she is not using her paddling muscles as much.

Dawn said she is traveling solo, just a glimpse of a sail or two on the horizon now and then.

My guess is she'll head on to Lovers Key.  Dawn definitely wants to be off the water by 10 or 11 pm for a good night's well deserved rest.  What she needed to do was get through the Sanibel Bridge and then onto the gulf - then she'll know what she can do tonight.

Dawn ended the call with a laugh, saying "I'm doing what I love, paddling and camping."
