Another cold morning. Wearing three layers plus the foul weather bibs. Sail off anchor 6:15 with a good north wind. 2.9 across Roque Harbor.
6:35 in the Thorofare that winds its way between Roque and Great Spruce Islands. 6:45 out of the Thorofare. 7:00 making 4.3 to Jonesport, wind aft of beam. A lobster boat called GREAT HEARTED WOMAN slows down to reduce wake for me, friendly waves and I tip my hat to them.
7:30 in the Thorofare to Jonesport, making 5.1 with the help of the running tide. 7:45 sails down, 7:55 tied to the town dock in Jonesport. Walk up to the little store for water and crackers, get a sausage biscuit for breakfast and a crab roll for lunch.
I ask the woman at the counter what kind of crab meat in the roll. She tells me Jonah crab, a by-catch in lobster pots. Loading up my mesh bags and tying three water bottles on a line to carry over my shoulder, a man paying for gas tells me to throw it all in the back of his truck and he'll drop me at the dock. How nice!
At the dock talk to a lobsterman who says the season has not been good. His boat is named TOWN LIAR so I am not sure I can believe him. 9:15 sails up outside the breakwater.
Making 3.8 down the Thorofare with the helping tide. The wind falls off and still make 2.7 with the current doing most of the work. 10:00 leaving the Thorofare, the water opens up wide so I lose the running tide too. Motorsailing at idle speed, waiting for the wind to swing from north to southwest. 10:50 Toms Island to port, Plummer Island to starboard. Can see wind ruffling the water ahead.
12:00 the southwest wind finally fills in. Gentle sailing on a beautiful day. Making 3.9 but it doesn't feel like it on the calm water. 1:00 I enjoy the beautiful clouds and pick out Mount Desert Island on the horizon. 1:15 making 4.7 with Petit Manan Lighthouse ahead. 2:00 over the shoal, rough and choppy.
2:30 sail by a lobster boat and ask if he would sell me a lobster for $10. He says ok. I pass his boat, come about and make a second pass, handing him a red mash bag with the $10 bill inside. I tell him I'll tack back for the lobster. Before I can turn around, a larger lobster boat runs up alongside my lobster guy and begin to talk with the lobsterman. My guy spreads his arms in the air, says "He wants to buy a lobster!" The lobstermen all laugh and give me a wave. Once the big boat is clear, I make a third pass and the lobsterman, his name is Phillip, sets the mesh bag in SPARTINA. I ask if I need to keep it wet. He says just keep it cool and in the shade.
3:50 sailing into the wind and the tide, keep sliding to port, can't make any headway. Motorsail the last stretch into Bunker Cove. Anchor down 4:25. Lobster on garlic and butter rice for dinner.
