A cold, cold night. Up before 6:00, wearing three layers. Hot chocolate with breakfast. Catching up on the log.
No wind. Raise anchor at 7:20, under power. 7:55 a tease of wind, not enough to raise sail.
8:25 a little wind. Sails up, making 0.8, then 1.4. 9:00 motorsailing. Not even sure of where I want to go today. Great Duck and Little Duck Islands to starboard, Baker Island in the distance off the port bow. Four lobster boats and three sailboats on the horizon. Try to sail, just drift for a while. 10:50 motorsailing towards Great Cranberry Island. 11:05 passing the ledges outside the channel that runs between Great Cranberry Island and Mt. Desert Island. 12:20 off Manset, wind and finally using the sails. Harbor master running by in a center console shouts "That's an interesting boat!" I laugh. SPARTINA has been called a lot of things, never has she been called interesting. I thank him. I stop at the fuel dock Beal's Lobster Pier and top off the gas can. I walk up to the restaurant thinking about lunch, there is a long line already. I buy a couple bottles of tea. 1:15 cast off in a building breeze.
Outside of Southwest Harbor I realize the wind is perfect for a run across Frenchman Bay to the Schoodic Peninsula. The southwest wind is hot and getting hotter. Making 4.7 off Bear Island.
2:40 passing the beaches and cliffs of Ingraham Point, 3.3. 2:55 Western Point to port, 4.3.
It is a steady, easy crossing of Frenchman's Bay, wind over the starboard quarter. I seem to have all that water to myself.
4:20 close enough to the peninsula that I can see people standing on the cliffs of Big Moose Island. 4:35 better wind off Little Moose Island, making 4.0. 4:40 turn north inside of Schoodic Island.
4:45 jibe. 5:10 jibe against past Rolling Island. Another jibe at 5:20 past Spruce Island, 4.5 downwind.
5:30 passing the rocks just outside of Bunker Cove. 5:45 anchor down in Bunker Cove. Tired. A hot meal, a cold beer.
