day eighteen - surprised on the Pamlico River

Calm night with a steady west wind.  Sail off anchor 6:25.  Beautiful morning with a series of tacks following the curve of Slade Creek.

7:10 lighter, shifting wind, struggling to make our way.  A stronger wind fills in.  Approaching the creek entrance, slip on foul weather bibs and boots.  Have the feeling things could get wet.  7:55 at Sandy Point, with Wades Point in sight to the south. On the Pungo River making 5.2.

8:25 doing 5.5 close-hauled.  8:40 makes Wades Point and now exposed to the wind and the waves.  Much stronger than I had expected.  Waves rolling down the length of the Pamlico.  I had hoped to make Bath, but it would be a long hard day.  I did not expect this and don't feel like pounding our way upriver.

Look across the Pamlico River and see the Goose Creek entrance markers.  And I remember a little creek I anchored in a few years ago. Decide to head there.

9:25 entering Goose Creek. Calmer wind and smooth water in the lee of the tree-lined shore.  Slip into Snode Creek before 10:00. Marsh lines the creek, pine trees all around.  Still a west wind, so a series of tacks up the creek.  Sunny and pleasant sailing.  Much better than pounding into the waves.

Anchor down in the mouth of a little gut at 10:40.  Bring down the sails, tuck the gear away, take a nap in the warm sunshine.

As the day begins to get hot, set up the boom tent and relax in the shade.  Reading, resting and catching up on the log book.
