day seventeen - shelter

Wind swings to the northeast overnight, a little rolly in the harbor.  6:30 motoring out of Bunker Cove, under a broken overcast.  Turn south to Schoodic Island, lots of ledges along the way, all easily visible in the calm water.  7:25  little wind at Little Moose Island, sails up.  Making 0.8 kts.  Big Moose Island, 2.3.  Then no wind.

Wind comes and goes, and what wind comes is very light.  Sailing at a just a knot or two, motor sailing, sometimes just drifting with the tide.  11:25 East Point on Mount Desert Island, ruffled water.  11:35 Seal Harbor to. starboard, wind and sailing.  The beautiful Friendship Sloop LINDA sails by.  Tacking downwind between Sutton Island and Mount Desert Island at 1.8.  12:15 cool and grey, making 0.9 and doing lazy tacks with the wind on the stern.  1:25 under power into Southwest Harbor.  Tie up at the Upper Town Dock.  Walk to Hamilton Marine and a hardware store to get some supplies.

I'm back at the dock tucking away some gear when a guy walks up, asks if I know someone named Matt.  I do know Matt, my Aussie friend with the Pathfinder TRIM.  The guy introduces himself as Luke, says he met Matt at Swan Island a week or so earlier.  Luke saw SPARTINA at the dock and recognized it as a Pathfinder.  Small world. Luke is doing a checkout with someone on a larger boat, says he will be done in an hour or so, offers a ride to the grocery store.  I accept his offer.

I'm back at SPARTINA when a motor launch comes to the dock.  I walk over to grab the lines form Alana, the woman on board.  She is with the local sailing program, coming to the dock to pick up students for an evening sail.  She too offers a ride to the grocery store.  People are nice in Southwest Harbor.  I tell her if my first offer doesn't work out, then I will take her up on her offer.

Luke arrives in his tuck in the evening, we run up to the grocery store which is beyond walking distance.  I grab what I need and Luke drives me back to the ramp.  I thank him for his time.  He says "I'm all about building good karma."  At the town dock parking lot, he points to a mooring just off the dock.  "No one has used that mooring all summer, you can probably tie up there for the night."  And I do.

The forecast from Erin is for waves, mostly tomorrow, less the day after.  No wind, just waves.  Southwest Harbor and nearby Somes Sound offer plenty of protection from any offshore waves.
