day nine - a bridge too far

Calm, peaceful night in Love Cove.  Not much wind in the forecast, think about how it would be nice to spend the day at the mooring in the pretty little cove.

Under power at 5:40, thin layer of fog on the water.  5:50 leaving the cove and entering the fog.  6:05 round Cameron Point and turn into Townsend Gut.  The gut leads to Booth Bay Harbor and I am think of maybe a nice breakfast - eggs over easy, bacon and hash browns - somewhere along the waterfront.

Passing the harbor at Southport, I round a point and see a bridge.  It doesn't take long to realize I will need an opening to get through.  Checking Navionics I see that it is the Southport Island Bridge and it opens on the hour and half hour.  Nice!  I make two calls on vhf channel 9 and get no response.  I try channel 13.  The bridge tender, sounding less than compassionate, responds "The bridge is inoperable.  Sorry for the inconvenience."  So much for breakfast in Booth Bay.  I thank the bridge tender, tell him to have a nice day.

Turn back.  Out of the gut and on the Sheepscot River at 6:45, passing between Green and Little Green Islands.  Fog covers the river and I navigate with gps.  7:20 fog clearing at Lower Mark Island.  7:45 turn towards the narrow, rocky entrance into Cape Harbor.

There is a mixture of pleasure boats and working lobster boats in the small harbor.  I tie up to a mooring, take a nap, hope for the wind to fill in.

8:50 cast off.  Still no wind.  9:05 passing between Cape Island and The Cuckolds.  9:45 teasing hints of wind as we cut between Fisherman and Ram Islands.  10:00 wind and sails up just north of The Hypocrites.

It is a light shifting wind.  Sail, motor sail, then sailing again.  10:30 Thrumcap Island is off the port beam, Pemaquit Point in the distance.  11:15 making 2.0 past Pemaquid Point.  Better wind at 11:50, making 2.4 to 3.0.

Easy sailing past Western Egg Rock and Franklin Island with it lighthouse.  2:05 Hump Ledge to port, 2.4 with wind over the starboard quarter.  2:20 surprised by the Seal Ledges, remind myself to keep a better eye on the gps for these rocks just below the surface.

Wind builds and making 5.0.  Heading wing and wing into the cut marked as Georges Harbor between Benner and Allen Islands.

In the cut less wind, making 2.5.  Greeting from couple of two cruising sailboats as we pass through.

2:50 through the cut, and the wind dies.  3:30 motor sailing to dodge Allen Ledge just outside the channel that leads into Port Clyde.  In the harbor tack back and forth through the mooring field, enjoying the boats tied up there.  4:50 anchor down just off Hupper Island North.  Hot, hot, hot.  Set the boom tent up for shade, enjoy a can of beer that I bought in the general store in Five Islands.
