La Jolla

This is where I spent a lot of time growing up.

the morning walk

The wife in Virginia says it's freezing. The daughter at school in the mountains says it is 11 degrees.

More planning and a visit to REI on tap for today.

a little bit of history

Out and about with Bruce today, having lunch, checking out the West Marine and doing some planning. We were in the area of Mission Bay so dropped by to look at a spot the holds a little bit of history. I thought I knew were it was from rereading a chapter from Open Boat: Across the Pacific. It took just a couple of minutes to find the patch of water on the bay.

Although the marina has been redone it was easy to recognize the place where Webb Chiles rowed away from the dock in his 18 foot 6 inch open boat Chidiock Tichborne on the first leg of his attempt to sail around the world. He cast off here, you can see the photo from his book below, on November 12, 1978. Next stop - 34 days and 3,000 miles later - the Marquesas.

I can't even begin to imagine.

heading to warmer weather

Too cold to varnish today.

Legal issues resolved (favorably!).

And a last week of use-or-lose vacation.

I'm heading out to San Diego to see my Mom and, of course, do a little planning with Bruce. These are a couple of photos that Bruce shot around San Diego. The top one is from the cliffs of Torrey Pines. And below, I'm guessing, is from the Children's Pool at Casa Cove in La Jolla.

Nice photos Bruce.

Can't wait to get back to my home town. (Below is a photo of a planning session. Can't you tell? We are very serious when making plans.)

yes, I am a pirate

An old headstone in the cemetery of St. Paul's Church in downtown Norfolk.

When I first got here over 20 years ago it stood in the middle of the cemetery surrounded by green grass, shaded by a canopy of trees. Old brick walls to the west, south and east, the old church itself to the north. It has since fallen over and is now fastened to the wall of the church. I go by and see it once in a while.

What's with the old photos????

Sorry about the old photographs in the last couple of posts. Just about all of them have been published on the blog before. In fact this photo below of Bruce on Core Sound was the first photo we published on the blog.

I've been wanting to create a couple of collections of photographs, one group showing calm water and the other one with stormy weather. Those are of course the far ends of the weather spectrum. Mostly the weather is somewhere in between. But sometimes it is windy and rough, other times it is glassy calm. I kind of enjoy both conditions.

Anyway I wanted to create these collections so I could look at them once in a while (I've found the blog to be both a great log book and a nice, easily accessible photo album). I've put links to these posts off to the right under "some photographs" and I will continue adding to them as I find other images or, once the weather warms, shoot some new ones.

Maybe I'll put together some other collections some day but for right now these are all I wanted to do.
