glassy calm

I don't know about you but I'm ready for a break. A little more than a week to go and I'm ready for some r and r. I did a post a couple of weeks ago about storms. I thought I should balance that out with some photos of calm water and no wind, usually early morning or late evening. There is almost always wind but sometimes it can get very quiet and peaceful.

Warehouse Creek, Chesapeake Bay

Tangier Sound

The Swash, Core Sound

Pamlico Sound

Neuse River

Great Fox Island, Chesapeake Bay

The Swash, Core Sound

Dixon Creek, off of Pamlico Sound

Wysocking Bay

Mouse Harbor

Dances with SandyBottom and I have been emailing back and forth about wind direction and routes and sailing into the wind. And there will be plenty of wind and certainly sailing to windward. But sometimes - maybe just for minutes or an hour - there will be no wind. And it is kind of nice, kind of peaceful. I'm ready for it.

In his infinite wisdom you'd think God could do a better job of distributing the wind more equitably---40 mph one day and 24 hrs. later smooth as a glass table top. If I had to think of something I hate worse than having to start the engine, it would be sinking, capsizing, or being on fire. That attitude can make August pretty uncomfortable. We were drifting one August when my wife was on me about starting the engine. I said, "Look at that bug going by. It's slow, but we're moving." To which she quipped, "He's swimming the other way. Start the damned engine."
